"I want a 3HP 10-inch cabinet saw"

I'm ready to turn my old table saw into a dedicated dado cutter and graduate to a big boy cabinet saw. Anyone have recommendations?

My 10-inch Powermatic cabinet sawPowermatic cabinet saw
Well, Andy, I can tell you that you will be very pleased to graduate from a table saw to a cabinet saw. The added precision and power will make you wonder how you got by with your old saw for so long.

Of course, they are not at all portable and can barely even be moved around a garage, so I hope you have a dedicated shop area where you can set it up and leave it!

I got this left-tilting Powermatic four years ago. It has retractable castors but also weights over 600 pounds so it's not something I move around a lot. The weight of the saw creates some fine stability while cutting which I am certain you will enjoy.

Overall, the craftsmanship that went into the production of this saw is wonderful. I'm sure Delta, Jet and the others make a fine cabinet saw as well, but I've been hands on with the Powermatic, and I am pleased!
comment As a contractor by trade, I'm more of a rough carpenter versus a finish carpenter. I'm looking to expand into cabinet making, however, and ended up getting the Powermatic that you recommended (found the best price on Amazon and ordered from there). So far so good. I love the sturdy, accurate fence and dust collection mechanism, and was very impressed with how carefully this heavy saw was packaged in a create and on a pallet. - HandyAndy 8 years, 1 month ago

Powermatic PM2000 Review: A video

Found this solid and detailed video review when I was shopping for a cabinet saw a couple years back.

Shows some good arbor and interior shots and shows the smart blade-changing and dust collection mechanisms as wall as the blade guard and fence system.

I compared the a Jet cabinet saw to the Powermatic, and ended up going with the Powermatic. Couldn't be happier with my choice.

The Powermatic is a smooth-running beast of a cabinet saw. Best saw in my shop by a country mile.

More information about table sawsTypes of Table Saws

A table saw is one of the most important saws in a woodworker's shop. There are a few form factors to consider when shopping for your next saw.

Portable Table Saws: Portable saws are what they say they are, easy to lift and move around which make them good for job sites. They tend to be louder, less powerful, less durable and less precise but, if the right saw is chosen, can still function nicely in a woodworker's shop.

Contractor Saws: Contractor saws are still light enough to carry job-to-job (barely) and are the most affordable option for a home shop. Although it has less substantial gearings and trunnions than a cabinet saw, its cast iron table and extension wings make it suitable for woodworking projects.

Cabinet Saws: Cabinet saws (named because of their fully enclosed cabinet base) are designed for the serious woodworker. They are very substantial, using more steel and cast iron than other types of saws. They sport more powerful motors and heavier trunnions, gears and arbors. The end result is very little vibration and the ability to cut practically any hardwood stock with ease. Because the motor is enclosed, it's also a quieter running saw.
