"I want a benchtop planer"

I need it to handle 12 inch boards at max. Delta, Dewalt or Makita. Not a fan of Bosch or Black and Decker. I'm looking for first-hand recommendations from owners of these models. Thanks.

My Benchtop Planer Recommendation and Review with Video

For years, I've been a loyal Delta Woodworking supporter and fan. It first started with Delta's sponsorship of my all time favorite show in television history: Norm Abrams The New Yankee Workshop. I watched this show so much as my daughter was growing up that she called him "Uncle Norm".

So, with that background, you'll understand why I bought and use the DELTA ShopMaster TP305 for my light-duty planing tasks. The Delta can probably be classified as a entry-level planer, considering the low price and lack of high-end features like multiple speed settings.

I recently determined that I needed a heavier duty, more professional model and got the excellent Makita 2012NB.

I love the powerful 15 amp motor, how quiet it is compared to my Delta and that I can avoid snipe on almost all passes through the planer. Unfortunately, this Makita video review is in Spanish, but you can still see many of the adjustments and operation of the Makita 2012NB.

But don't just take my work for it, it has an unassailable reputation as a durable, hard working, excellent professional planer.

Make your own power thickness planer

Check out this ingenious homemade thickness planer.

Unfortunately, the explanation is in Hebrew, but it seems to be a pretty simple device which mounts a standard and low cost belt sander above a table. You turn on the belt sander and simply push the block of wood through.

This isn't going to work for anything wider than the width of the belt sander, but it would do a pretty good job on small pieces like frame sides.

Everyone who has a shop has a belt sander lying around doing nothing, with a couple hours of jig making, you can have a mini benchtop planer.

Great find, Erastus! My belt sander sits idle for 99% of the year. I bet if I mounted it a jig like this I'd use it 10 times more than I currently do. - mitch 11 months, 3 weeks ago
