"I want a hot water boiler"

I make instant coffee two times a day (Starbuck Via baby!) and sometimes tea at night. I need a nice looking, energy efficient thermal hot pot.

Counter top hot water boiler recommendation: Zojirushi and Panasonic

When it comes to counter top appliances, I personally look no further than Zojirushi. In my opinion, they have the best features, looks and durability.

That being said, if you want a 4-liter capacity boiler, I went with this stainless steel Zojirushi Hybrid Water Boiler (Price: $155). It has the obligatory "unlock" button so the littles won't scald themselves and has very well thought out controls for setting to the various temperature and activating the timer.

If you are concerned about energy usage, there is a vacuum temperature option which uses no electricity and maintains the water temperature at 150 degree for 8 hrs. When you need hotter water, simply press the "REBOIL" button and in under 8 minutes you'll have 212 degree water. Very cool, cost conscious and environmentally friendly!

There is also a 3-liter version (Price: $105).

If, unlike me, you are willing to consider a non-Zojirushi my sister-in-law has this Panasonic 3-Quart thermo pot that she really likes. Can't argue with the price ($69) as long as it holds up!
comment My family only buys Zojirushi as well. Too funny. I miss my Mom's water boiler so much! - amykim 9 years ago
comment TIP: As a seasoned water boiler user I have this bit of advice. After refilling and emptying the boiler a number of times, you will eventually find that the flow from the nozzle will diminish. The first time this happened to me I was convinced my pump had gone. In fact what had happened was scale buildup on the inside of the reservoir. The simple solution? A mixture of lemon juice and water allowed to sit in the boiler for a bit and then run through the spout a few time. Fixed! - mieyun 9 years ago

How to descale your hot water boiler with lemon juice

I have a 7 year old Zojurushi hot water boiler. Every 6 to 12 months I go to pour some hot water for a cup of coffee (Starbucks Via, yeah!) and the water flow out of the nozzle is slow and labored.

The first time it happened, I thought my poor Zojirushi boiler was shot, then I looked online and realized that it just needed to be cleaned. Scale buildup was blocking the flow of water. Below are the steps I found to clean it up like new.

How to descale a Zojirushi hot water boiler:
  1. Create a mixture of 1/2 cup lemon juice from concentrate and 1/2 cup warm water (if you use squeezed lemon juice you should strain out the pulp first).

  2. Pour the mixture into the boiler and then fill the container with water up to the maximum fill line.

  3. Close the lid, press and hold the REBOIL button for three seconds to activate the descaling mode.

  4. When the descaling is complete, empty the water boiler by dispensing the boiled water through the spout as you normally would. Optionally: catch the lemon/water mixture and refill the reservoir so you can run it through a couple more times.

  5. When the boiler is empty and cool, wipe down the inside with a clean towel.

  6. Fill the pot with clean water, boil and fully dispense to remove any lemon traces.

That's it, you'll now have a clean and well functioning water boiler!

Why Do I Need a Hot Water Boiler?

Hot water boilers are super convenient for making hot drinks like instant coffee, tea or hot chocolate or for making instant soups or oatmeal. Like rice cookers, we believe that the added convenience is worth the little bit of extra counter space they take up.

Most water boilers have temperature settings -- usually 140, 175, 195 and 208 degrees Fahrenheit -- and will display the current water temperature at all times. Another common feature is a timer to only heat the water while you are awake and in need of it.
