"I want a lawn care treatment company like Scotts"

My lawn has become brown and muddy from all the snow and water. I need a professional lawn service company to make the grass green again. Any advice, recommendations or rates about TruGreen lawn service or Scotts Lawn service and some organic alternatives?

I can't believe we survived that horrible winter. It's hard to believe that there is any grass left under all of that dirty, melting snow.

Now that Spring is here, it's a good time to start looking for a reliable company to do all that lawn maintenance you just don't like doing yourself: cleaning up fallen tree limbs, removing the dead leaves you ignored last Fall, regularly mowing and trimming your lawn and fertilizing your lawn to insure that is green, weed-free, lush and beautiful for BBQ season.

Finding a lawn care company is not a difficult task. Before starting an online search or cracking open that dusty old yellow pages book, ask your friends and neighbors if they have a first-hand recommendation for a lawn service.

Basic background questions:

  1. Was the service reliable in showing up on-time on the days that you expected them

  2. Was the service provider professional in appearance and behavior, and most importantly,

  3. Did the service produce a lawn that made their neighbors green with envy

If not, then look online. There are plenty of resources to select from.

What to expect from a good lawn service:

  • Sparing application of insecticides: Insecticides should only be applied when there is a clear sign of problems like grubs, large ant colonies, Japanese beetles or cutworms, among others

  • Only a couple fertilizer treatments per year: Once in the Spring and once in the Fall. In the Northeast, never fertilize in the Summer. Over fertilizing will actually weaken the grass.

  • Organic fertilizer is better for you, your lawn, your pets and the environment: Organic fetilizers like Ringers, Greensense, Espoma and Texas Tee are digested by soil microbes which releases the fertilizing nitrogen. The fed microbes will provide other benefits to your grass like decomposing dead plants and organic matter, developing soil structure and helping to retain moisture. Chemical fertilizers cut out the microbe middleman and directly feed nitrogen to the grass which provides a faster, more direct benefit but doesn't support the microbes and their secondary benefits.

  • Proper mowing: I'd suggest you get on a fixed-fee program so the lawn care company won't have an incentive to over mow your lawn, once a week should be plenty even in the most active growing season. Make sure they mow it nice and high so the grass has plenty of leaf to make food and shade the ground from weed growth. Mowing to about 2-1/2 inches is a good target, and mowing when the grass is about 3-1/2 inches high will make sure that less than 1/3 of the blade is removed.

Like every other time you are looking to hire someone to do home maintenance, it is a good idea to contact a few companies before making your choice. Ask for references and make sure there are no bad customer experiences associated with service companies that you are considering. It's always a good idea to check the Better Business Bureau for excessive, repetitive or unresolved complaints.

How to mow a lawn: how high should I mow my grass?

How high should I mow my grass
Need help with how to mow a lawn? Generally you should mow your grass to about 2.5 inches, but it is important never to take more than 1/3 of the blade at a time.

The extra height helps to inhibit the growth of crabgrass and other ugly weeds and allows your grass to develop a better, more robust root system.

If you are away on vacation or miss a mowing, you should reset you lawnmower height based on the current height of your grass so you only take off 1/3 of the current height.

For example, if your lawn has grown to 4.5 inches, set your mower blades to 4.5" * 0.67 = 3 inches. After you are done, reset the lawnmower blade height to your normal 2.5 inches and mow the lawn again in a few days to get yourself back on schedule.

Comparing Organic vs. Chemical Fertilizers

Central air conditioner price and estimate

Fertilizing your home's yard is a lawn care step that every homeowner should take a couple of times a year. But should you go organic or go with the readily available chemical products? Well, that's up to you, check out the characteristic of each below.

Characteristics of Organic Fertilizers

  • Helps build soil as well as plants: provides organic matter which promotes helpful and essential microbe growth
  • Provides a slow and steady release of nutrients: much lowered risk of over concentration since the microbes actually break down the components into the nitrogen that the plants need
  • Longer lasting benefits: the fertilizer is not water soluble and doesn't wash away as easily
  • Environmentally friendly: application will not build up over time or cause harmful runoff
  • Will not burn your lawn: since it is not salt-based like chemical fertilizers, there is no risk of burning you lawn from over application

Characteristics of Chemical Fertilizers

  • Cheaper and more readily available: you can pick up a number of commercial brands at you local home improvement center
  • Acts fast: since it is a direct food application to your lawn (and doesn't promote or require microbe participation) you can often see positive results more quickly
  • Is water soluble: up to 1/3 of the applied nutrient can wash away before your lawn is able to use them
  • Overuse will chase away earthworms which are necessary for a health lawn
  • Improper application can be bad for the surrounding environment

Read more fertilizer comparisons and make a decision which best suits your needs.
