"I want a memory card for my camera"

I need an SDHC card for my 10 megapixel camera. But not sure whether manufacturer, class rating, size matters.

Camera Memory Card Advice: Eye-Fi

If you haven't checked out the Eye-Fi card yet, you should before making the decisions to get a standard SDHC card.

In a nutshell, the Eye-Fi looks and acts like a standard SDHC memory card. You put it in your camera the same way, take pictures and they get stored on the card. The big difference: once you are within range of your home wireless network, it automatically downloads your photos to your computer.

I got an Eye-Fi a couple of years ago and found that it made huge and multiple memory cards unnecessary because photos were always getting pulled off the card for me. It is very simple to setup the connection to your WiFi network and works great. It was also possible to set it up to automatically upload files directly to sites like Flickr, Evernote, Facebook, YouTube, Shutterfly, SnapFish and a bunch more. The Eye-Fi site lists 29 services that you can automatically upload to.

The only time you need a backup SDHC card (or a larger Eye-Fi) is when you are travelling for a week or two and won't be able to download your photos off the card. Still, what I did when we were in Paris was manually download them to my laptop. I think I have the 2 GB version, which has never felt limiting. Today, I would probably get the 4 GB model, just because it is so cheap.

I see from the Eye-Fi website that they have bunch of models now, a feature comparison of Eye-Fi models:
  • Eye-Fi Connect X2: The base model

  • Eye-Fi Geo X2: Base model + Eye-Fi's geotagging service

  • Eye-Fi Explore X2: Geo X2 + ability to upload via AT&T hotspots

  • Eye-Fi Pro X2: Explore X2 + ability to upload RAW format photos + Ad Hoc networking

Note: All have Class 6 read/write speeds and wireless photo and video uploads to your computer. Full comparison is here.

About SDHC Memory Cards

SDHC stands for "Secure Digital High-Capacity" card. SDHC cards are flash-based and have a capacity of between 4 GB and 32 GB. SDHC cards are used in digital still and video cameras, MP3 players, and some PDAs, among other devices.

SDHC cards are classified based on their sustained data transfer speed (DTS):
  • Class 2: minimum sustained DTS of 2 MB per second

  • Class 4: minimum sustained DTS of 4 MB per second

  • Class 6: minimum sustained DTS of 6 MB per second

SDHC memory cards are approximately the size of a postage stamp. Micro SDHC cards are about one quarter the size of SDHC cards and can be used with adapters to fit into devices which expect the larger format.
