The new roof needs to withstand the cold and snow of New England winters and mesh with our Mediterranean Villa inspired home. Our hip roof has quite a few dormers and a couple of mostly decorative sections.

I've worked on a few crews that have installed tile roofs. The material prices are higher and they are more difficult to install, which results in a higher total price. Nonetheless, I believe they are a great choice since they last such a long time (the manufacturers say up to 60 or 70 years), look fantastic, are fireproof and are a great insulator keeping homes cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Your typical clay tile roof is very heavy, much heavier than your current asphalt shingles and may require additional structural reinforcement to support it. There are options available which are lighter and don't require the extra support, however (e.g. concrete fiber, synthetic roofing tiles, even metal for a more contemporary look).

The standard red clay tile is not your only choice either. I've installed tile roofs that looked like slate, wooden shakes and wooden shingles and with colors ranging from a light gray to green or blue.

In my opinion, if you are planning on selling your house in the near future, a professionally installed tile roof will significantly add to the curb appeal and give you home a greater sense of style and quality than a typical asphalt roof will.
