"I want a sump pump install and back up to prevent basement water damage"

Worried about flooding and water damage from the snow and ice melting. I have a french drain but wondering if I need a sump pump install as well as an emergency back up sump pump.

Sump pump install and back up to prevent basement flooding

I recently went through this myself. You are wise to be considering a sump pump back up at the same time as a sump pump install. After all, you are most likely to lose your power after that huge rain and windstorm that flooded your basement. Without power, you might as well not have a sump pump installed.

The sump pump install itself is a pretty straight-forward job. If you do-it-yourself you can get it done for under $500 and a few hours of effort. If you have a concrete basement floor, you will need to rent a jack hammer from your local tool rental or home improvement center. You also need a sump pump, a plastic or metal canister to sit in the sump pit and hold the pump, some PVC pipe and a check valve to prevent water flowing flowing back towards the pump on power loss.

Popular Mechanics has a nice how-to for installing a sump pump.

If you'd rather do something else on a Saturday, then you can find a local sump pump installation professional and have them do the dirty work for you.

Regardless of how you go about your sump pump install you should definitely get a sump pump battery backup system. It's a small bit of insurance to make sure that all the time and money you put into your main basement drainage system doesn't go to waste at the first flood plus power outage!

Ping me if you have any questions, happy to help and share my experiences further.

Sump pump install video

Here is a step-by-step video showing a sump pump install.

You will need to install the sump pump in the lowest corner of you basement where the water tends to flow and pool.

Next jackhammer and dig out a hole deep enough for the submersible sump pump and drum. Lay in the pump, surround it with gravel, attach a drainage hose, connect it to power and you are done.

As butchy points out above, however, don't forget a sump pump back up system. You won't regret that the first time it kicks in!

More information about What is a Sump Pump?

Sump pump and battery backup system
A sump pump is an electric pump that you place in your home's basement to remove any flood or ground water that leaks in from outside the foundation. Some sump pump systems drain the flood water into your home's waste water system and others simply drain the water back outside.

Sump pumps usually are installed into a sump pit. These submersible sump pumps sit in the pit and as it fills with water, they activate and pump the water out of the pit. Often times, drainage trenches are dug that lead to the sump pit to collect the maximum amount of basement water for pumping.

Another common type is the upright or pedestal sump pump. This pump sits above the sump pit and with only a feed hose and water sensor submersed. This type of pump is easier to maintain and repair because of it's greater accessibility.
