Buying a gas range stove: things to consider

GE Cafe burner controlsGE Cafe burner controls
Massachusetts recently had a sales tax-free weekend. My husband and I crammed on some research so we could buy a gas stove and range, a new bottom-freezer refrigerator and a new over the range (OTR) microwave.

We went back and forth between the GE Cafe (CGS980SEMSS) and the Electrolux gas range (EW30GS65GS) and eventually chose the GE because of the 5th burner/griddle and the overall look of the range.

Here are a few things that we learned that might jump start your own gas range shopping:

  • A variety of burner strengths: One thing I was looking for and which was present in a lot of the gas ranges that we looked at was a varied heat output on a few of the burners on the range. Check out the specs on the ranges you look at and pay attention to the maximum and minimum BTUs of each burner. A wide BTU range will give you more cooking options (see "Simmer and Power" note below).

  • A 5th burner: The GE Cafe has a fifth burner that sits between the standard four burners of a typical range top. This fifth burner is much lower powered, but can be fitted with an included griddle to produce a "griddle in the middle" configuration. This 6,000 BTU burner/griddle is ideal for cooking pancakes, french toast, grilled cheese sandwiches, paninis, eggs and quesadillas, to name a few. In other words, every food my kids love to eat :)

  • Simmer and Power burners: Most modern gas ranges vary the power of the gas burners on the stovetop. For example, the GE Cafe has a 18,000 BTU "Dual Flame Stacked Burner", a 17,000 BTU "Power Boil Burner", a 5,000 BTU "Precise Simmer Burner" and a 9,100 "All-Purpose Burner" as well as the 6,000 BTU "Center Oval Burner". This variety give you a lot of precision and flexibility when choosing to boil a big pot of water for pasta or simmering some turkey gravy for Thanksgiving dinner. The Electrolux, on the other hand, touts its 400-18,000 BTU burner which gives you much greater control over the low-simmer.

  • Baking or Warming drawer: On our current gas range, the bottom drawer is used for storing cookie sheets and broiling pans. I guess times have changed over the past 15 years, because now that space is uses as either a secondary baking oven or as a warming drawer. On the GE Cafe, it is a 140 degree to 450 degree baking drawer. On the Electrolux, it is an electric heating drawer.

  • Duel-Fuel ovens: We have a gas hookup, and gas was what we were looking for. We did see some ranges which had gas burners and an electric oven. These require both a gas hookup as well as a 240-volt electrical connection to handle the oven. Many people consider electric ovens to be better for baking, so this configuration would be ideal for those of you who love baking. I don't bake much, so chose a gas-only range.

Best of luck with your shopping!

Finding the best gas stove: some more tips

The GE Cafe is not a slide-inThe GE Cafe is not a slide-in
A couple other things to know when looking for the best gas stove:

  • Midrange vs. Professional gas ranges: If you get a midrange gas range stove like the GE Cafe or the Electrolux, your can configure your setup with a microwave over the cooktop (tucked into the cabinets). If you choose a high-end gas range like this Thermador 36 inch gas range then you will have to put a range hood over the cooktop, since the gas stove will generate too much heat for an over the range microwave.

  • Check your measurements before buying: break out your tape measure and make accurate measurements of your counter opening and gas line location before scheduling shipment of your new range. The GE Cafe "Quick Spec" sheet shows you where it expects the gas line and electrical outlet to be. If your are withing the range, then you should have no problems. If not, contact a qualified appliance installer to double check your configuration before purchasing your new range.

Most of the time, this will include the delivery of your new range and the take-away of your old gas range. Expect this charge to be between $75 and $150. In most states, gas ranges will also need to be installed by a licensed plumber (find an appliance installer near you) which will cost around $200 or $250.

Most appliance stores will price-match, so shop around. As well, you can oftentimes avoid paying sales taxes by buying online. Do you research and make sure and look around for any manufacturer's rebates.

More information about gas range and baking ovensTypes of Ranges

Fuel Type. Your first consideration when buying a new range is what fuel type you have and will require for you new purchase. Options are gas, electric, induction (electric) or propane. Typically, you will go with what you already had. Gas cooktops are considered superior because of the control they give you over the heat you use. Electric ovens, however, are considered better than gas ovens.

If you want the best of both worlds, GE, Bosch, KitchenAid, Frigidaire and Electrolux (among others) make dual-fuel ranges with gas cooktops and electric ovens. You will need to have an available gas hookup as well as a 240 volt electrical outlet to use a dual-fuel range.

Range configuration: Check whether you need a slide-in model which laps slightly over the edge of you countertop and has no (or a minimal) back panel, a stand alone which can either stand by itself next to or in between a counter opening, a built into the wall oven, or simply a range top.

Finish: Finally, select a finish for your gas range. Typical options are white, bisque, black and stainless steel.
