Install ice belts to prevent ice dams

Installing ice belts to prevent ice damming is possible for your advanced do-it-yourselfer with some roofing experience. Just make sure and start the project before the snow flies! Also, be careful working on the roof.

In many situations ice belts are effective in preventing ice damming. In certain roofing layouts, however, they are less effective if they work at all. In the case where a roof pitch change occurs above the ice belt, ice dams may form in that pitch change and still lead to a roof leak.

These are rare situations, however, and unless your home is in an area that receives a large amount of snow and has extremely low temperatures, an ice belt might solve the problem of ice dam and roof leaks for your situation.

Install roof heat cables to prevent ice on roof and ice dams

An alternative approach is to install roof heat cables on your roof to prevent ice dams from forming. It is probably a less costly approach, but also somewhat less attractive.

Personally, I really like the way copper ice belts dress up the appearance of a roof.

When to Use Ice Belts for Ice Dams

Use copper or sheet metal ice belts if you don't happen to mind the appearance of a gleaming two foot wide metallic strip installed across the edge of your home's roof. Ice belts are generally acceptable options for a number of patch and fix jobs on current homes.

This kind of eaves flashing technique attempts to do what steel roof covering does: get rid of snow and ice before it leads to an issue. Unfortunately, this only works part of the time and the commonly reported problem with ice belts is that they do not always work effectively. Frequently, another ice dam builds up just over the top fringe of the metal strip.

How much do Ice Belts Cost?

Ice belts can be purchased as 32-inch by 36-inch strips (with additional attachment hardware) for approximately $12 per panel.

So for a typical 2,500 square foot house with 100 to 150 feet of eaves, the ice belt materials will cost approximately $400 to $650. Expect to pay double the material cost and another $500 to $1,000 for installation, if you hire a professional roofing installer.

What is an Ice Dam?

What is ice damming?

Any time snowfall builds up on a house, a pattern of melting and refreezing happens. In a ideal situation, the snowfall would melt from your roof, drain into the gutters, and pass directly to the ground. Unfortunately, two things work together to trigger issues: the outdoor temperature and the temperature in your attic space.

The warmer that your attic space is, the greater melt off that occurs at the roof. This melted snow would normally flow off the edge of the roof. However, when the air temperature is low, the runoff re-freezes near the edge of your roof, since the interior roof area is no longer getting heated up from the attic. This kind of refreezing progressively creates what is referred to as an "ice dam", an expanding mass of ice that obstructs the flow of the melted snow off the roof.

Once this ice dam develops to a specific level, the water from the melted snow "dams" up behind it and may eventually work its way beneath the roofing shingles and into your house. On a roof which has a minimal incline, a small ice dam can result in water back-up and seepage.
