"I want an outdoor wireless security camera"

Needs to be color, waterproof, wireless (WiFi), with web browser access to monitor the streaming video. Will be used for home monitoring and surveillance. All advice appreciated!

Outdoor Wireless Security Camera: My Advice & Recommendation

For me, the main thing to look for in these WiFi surveillance cameras is the ability to connect them to your home wireless network and see the video feed right in your browser, be that Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft IE or Apple Safari. If the video is viewable in a browser, then it is viewable on a smartphone like an iPhone, Blackberry, Android, or Palm.

A lot of cameras are additional units that fit into a dedicated system with their own DVR, video receiver and monitor. When buying a single camera, you don't want that, especially if you don't own the base components. The models listed below are stand-alone cameras which can connect to your home network and be viewed via a browser.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
OPTION #1: Wider Field of View, Shorter Viewing Distance
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Foscam FI8904W Outdoor Wireless/Wired IP Camera with 15-20 Meter Night Vision and 67° Viewing Angle - Silver - Price: $95
  • Very wide viewing angle to capture more visible area, night vision up to 65 feet away

  • Simple to setup, friendly GUI, remote viewing, record from anywhere anytime

  • Weatherproof for outdoor installation

  • Motion detection alert via email or image upload to a FTP server

  • Supports all standard browsers and can be viewed remotely using a smartphone

  • Built-in WiFi (b/g) supporting WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption

----------------------------------------------------------------------
OPTION #2: Narrow Field of View, Longer Viewing Distance
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Foscam FI8905W Outdoor Wireless/Wired IP Camera with 30 Meter Night Vision and 22° Viewing Angle - Silver - Price: $93
  • Narrower viewing angle to allow viewing farther distances from the camera (up to 100 feet when using night vision)

  • Simple to setup, friendly GUI, remote viewing, record from anywhere anytime

  • Waterproof for outdoor installation

  • Night vision up to 30 meters

  • Motion detection alert via email or image upload to a FTP server

  • Supports all standard browsers and can be viewed remotely using a smartphone

  • Built-in WiFi (b/g) supporting WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption

NOTE: Be warned that these cameras are possibly Chinese knock-offs designed to look like Foscam cameras which would normally sell for around $150. If you can fight your way through the likely poor user documentation, you can get yourself a good camera for a much lower price.

If you can't, you should probably buy the Foscam FI8905W Wireless Outdoor IP Camera Waterproof WPA on Foscam.com and pay the full and official price.

NOTE 2: My indoor camera is a Chinese-made option with poor documentation, but I was able to get it installed and running pretty quickly on my home network. Overall, I'm happy with its performance, features and the much lower price I ended up paying for it. If it were me (and it will be, since I need an outdoor camera) I'd give one of the Amazon cameras listed above a shot. Since it is Amazon, you can always return it without hassle.
comment I updated this reply since the last camera I recommended (the Lorex LW2701AC1) was part of a base system and not stand-alone. Oops! - mitch 8 years, 10 months ago
comment I went with this wider angle version because, as a security camera I'm interested in seeing more of my outdoors rather than seeing farther from my house in the dark. Docs were a bit tricksy, but it's very easy to setup even without them. - JayC 8 years, 10 months ago

Indoor WiFi Video Security Camera: Advice, Recommendation and Price

This is the wireless camera that I bought a few months back and that I use to monitor the approach to my driveway. It's highly rated with 3.5 out of 5 stars from 49 customer reviews. 67% of reviewers give it 4 or 5 stars.

Wireless IP Camera with Pan & Tilt, Night Vision, 2 Way Audio, Apple Mac and Windows compatible, Color (Black) - Price: $89
  • very simple to setup

  • auto night vision

  • browser-based pan, tilt, scan controls

  • supports 640x480 and 320x240 video resolutions

  • wireless connection (WiFi)

  • port for a wired network connection (RJ 45)

  • motion detection alarm

  • Mac and Windows compatible

It works very well and is much cheaper (1/2 to 1/3 the price of buying in a store like Best Buy). It connects to my wireless network and lets me view it via a regular browser on my computer or iPhone. At this point, I'd be totally lost without a remote view down my driveway, so I'd classify it as a big success. Not sure if the above video camera will work outdoors though, maybe under an eave.
comment NOTE: I've had this camera for about half a year now and I use it every day to monitor my driveway. It's useful for just keeping an eye out, when you are waiting for guests to arrive or to see what the dog is barking about. I may get an outdoor wireless camera as well since the night vision doesn't work well through window glass. Having an outdoor, weatherproof camera would fix this and give me the night vision that my indoor wireless security camera does not. - mitch 8 years, 8 months ago

Re: I want an outdoor wireless security camera

I recently read about these cameras in a blog about family safety information. I searched the Internet for surveillance cameras, wireless and found these: http://www.espow.com/wholesale-security-surveillance-surveillance-cameras-wireless-camera-sets.html

They are wireless surveillance cameras that look good and the price is reasonable. Check them out for yourself and then decide to purchase! But quality is good and see if I can help you.
