That time will depend on your location and what mixture, so your best bet is to contact a local professional to get specific details.
If you are tempted to pull out your ladder and power washer to do the washing yourself, I recommend that you don't. Besides the danger of weilding a heavy piece of equipment on a wet roof, there is a high likelihood that you will damage the asphalt shingles with your power washer if you are not exceptionally careful. Also, a local professional will be more knowledgeable about what herbicides and cleaning agents work in your geographic area.

Cost to clean an asphalt shingle roof: $600
Last year when I was selling my house in Mount Lebanon, PA (just south of Pittsburgh) my real estate broker noticed that the asphalt shingle roof of my house was stained, discolored and "old looking".
At first, he thought I might have to get my roof replaced in order to sell the house. He also suggested that I first try getting it cleaned to see if that would restore it to a condition where a potential buyer wouldn't notice it as a major issue.
I called a local roof cleaner, they came and took a look, gave me a price quote of $600 and came out a few days later. They had a crew of two people and spray-washed the roof with some water and a cleaning agent and were done within 3 hours.
The two roof cleaners successfully restored the roof to a like-new appearance and I successfully sold it a month later, which is a borderline miracle in this economy and housing market.

What you have on your roof is a form of mold and bacteria. Many years back they switched over to a fiberglass based shingle in place of the old asphalt based. The new fiberglass based shingles were very light so they added crushed limestone to make them heavier.
The limestone is the issue. The wind-blown particles will attach themselves to the shingles and start to feed. The black steaks will appear a short time later as a protective shade. This typically happens on the northern side and areas with very little sun exposure.

If your home's roof is not too steep and not excessively high, you can attempt the washing yourself with a hose and a simple bleach or citric acid solution. We don't recommend this, however, since you can very easily do more harm than good if your 2600 psi power washer hits your shingled roof at the wrong angle.
This job is best left to the professionals. Let them be the ones to climb on top of your hot roof, get filthy, soaking wet and have to deal with covering up all your nice shrubbery so the cleaning agents and herbicides don't harm them.
