Need the price of granite countertops and some pictures of granite countertops. I have a laminate now which is in bad shape and is an eyesore.

Granite for countertops, an excellent choice...

I have installed a half dozen granite countertops in the past few years and most came in between $5,000 and $7,500 installed.

The granite cost can vary wildly depending on the color, finish, pattern, country of origin and "tier" or quality level.

My most common job was a mid-tier, 1-1/2-inch build-up with a three inch backsplash and standard, rounded edge. Once you get your granite installed, make sure and keep it sealed. Granite is porous and sealing it helps keep the stains out and the shine bright.

I can tell you one thing for sure, not a single one of my kitchen renovation clients ever complained about missing their old laminate countertops! Granite countertops look great and really dress up your kitchen's appearance.

What is the Price of Granite Countertops?

Your specific price will depend on how much granite countertop you need and specifics like appliance cutouts, edging, finish, backsplash and stone grade. Expect an average granite countertop install to cost between $4,000 and $8,000 installed. The price will range between $50 and $150 per square foot plus around$20 per square foot for installation.

There are a number of factors which will impact your final cost, the first being the quality, or tier, or the granite you select. The higher the tier, the better the grain and overall appearance of the granite, and of course, the higher the cost per square foot.

A second cost driver will be the thickness of the countertop. If you choose a 3/4-inch top, it will obviously be less material and less costly than a 1 and 1/2-inch top. Beside allowing for greater cantilevers on islands and the end of your countertop, a thicker slap will tend to have a better finish.

Granite and Countertops: The Options

Slab Granite Countertop: Slab granite countertops are the highest end option for refinishing your kitchen countertops. The granite countertop is fabricated off-site and shipped to your home. Because of the size, weight and impossibility of moving around, slab granite countertops should only be installed by qualified countertop installers.

Modular Granite Countertop: Modular granite countertops are the middle level between slab granite and granite tile. They come in larger sections, with corners, edges and backsplashes already created. An experienced do-it-yourselfer can then assemble the pre-fabricated parts in their kitchen, with far fewer visible seams than the next option.

Granite Tile Countertop: This is an inexpensive granite countertop option, where essentialy floor tiles are assembled for your countertop and, instead of mortar and grout, sealed with an epoxy. Although cheaper, the look is not as professional, and the abundance of seams is not ideal as they can tend to crack, shift and leak.
