Get mold remediation in your area: and know the health risks of mold and mildew!

Oh Jheyun! If you have young kids you should have this remediated quickly and completely! Black mold is toxic and can result in bad health problems like lung irritation, difficulty breathin, allergic reactions, headaches and chronic fatigue!

Not all mold is created equally. Some, like black mold, is more toxic than others. What is black mold? Well unless you have a microscope, I can't show you, so get a good local professional in for identification and removal of mold in your home ASAP!
comment SoopahMom is right. You should put removing this mold problem at the top of your home to-do list. - HandyAndy 6 years, 1 month ago

Removal of mold from your walls: a DIY video

Here's a video showing how a normal homeowner can do removal of mold from the accessible interior surfaces of their walls.

It requires a mold cleaner spray and fungicide and some basic cleaning supplies. This video is pitching a specific product, but there a lot of choices to pick from.

The basic mold and remediation steps for a small, visible patch on your wall:
  1. Ventilate the area: you don't want to be breathing in the cleaner fumes or the black mold

  2. Wet the area with the cleaner: spray the fungicide on the wall and let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes.

  3. Wipe the mold with a wet sponge: the mold should come off the wall, and even if stains remain, the fungicide should have killed all the mold.

  4. Paint over the area: after the wall has dried, you can paint over the area where the mold was. If you don't take the time for removal of mold before painting, it can leach through your new paint job.

How much does it cost?
If your mold and mildew problem is confined to a small area, you can try cleaning it yourself with a good fungicide (cost: $30 to $60) and a little elbow grease.

If your mold problem is more severe, expect to hire a professional and pay around $300 to $500 for mold testing and between $2,500 and $5,500 to fully clean your walls, ductwork, attic and crawl spaces. A good mold and remediation service will not only kill the actively growing mold, but will thoroughly remove it from your home. Even dead mold can cause health problems.

More information about Removal of Mold and Remediation Tips

Prevention: First things first, you must fix the source of the water infiltration. Common water and moisture problems are caused by ice dams, roofing or siding failure, or a leaking sink or shower. Use a dehumidifier or an air conditioner to maintain a low interior humidity (below 50%, if possible), and make sure that your clothes dryer is properly vented to the outside.

Detection: Some mold problems are easy to locate. Look behind appliance (refrigerator, stove, washer, dryer), check the lower part or your basement walls, and look under rugs and rug pads. If you suspect that you may have mold in your wall cavities, crawl spaces or attic, you should contract a qualified local professional to take a look.

Remediation: Once again, the most important first step is to fix the source of the problem moisture. You can clean small, visible mold and mildew problems with a good fungicide and sponge. You will have to remove and replace any irreparably damaged building materials (drywall, studs, baseboard, etc). While you work, you must protect yourself with a good ventilator and gloves. If you are not up for the job, contact an experienced local professional to handle it for you.
