"I want solid oak wood flooring installed"

Much of my first floor is either carpeted, tiled or covered in a laminated wood floor. Want it all pulled out and replaced with a solid oak wood floor.

Hi Bill, I just got a bunch of great feedback on my similar oak flooring want. Check it out if you don't get enough replies here!

In a nutshell, check out PEFC certified flooring if you are a fan of the earth :)

Take a look at engineered oak flooring if you want to save some money

This video compares a piece of solid oak flooring with an engineered oak flooring sample.

The engineered oak flooring is layers of birch plywood with a 6mm (or just under 1/4 inch) layer of solid oak on top.

The 1/4 inch of solid oak will still be enough to allow for a few sandings and refinishings down the road but will use the cheaper and more dimensionally stable birch plywood for the bulk of it's depth.

The plywood will be much less susceptible to expansion and contractions than a solid board would, especially in rooms where you have constantly running air conditioning or under-floor heating.

Another huge benefit is the cost. According to Consumer Products Reviews, the cost of an engineered oak floor will generally be only about 25% of the total cost of installing solid oak hardwood floors. yeah, that's 25% *of* the price, not 25% *off* the price...huge savings.

Find a reputable hardwood flooring installer and they will give you a free estimate for the specifics for your job.

What Does it Cost to Install Oak Flooring?

According to Rob McNealy of the website "Ask A Floor Guy", there are many factors which impact how much it costs to install oak hardwood flooring. Rob notes that the primary drivers of a hardwood flooring cost estimate are:

the species of hardwood
the oak floor grade
the oak floor board finish, and
the oak floor board width

All other factors remaining the same, oak hardwood flooring is the cheapest species for hardwood floors. Maple, Cherry and Hickory hardwood floors will each increase your final installation cost.

A local oak flooring installation professional will be able to give you an accurate cost estimate for your job, but plan for around $8.00 per square foot as an average cost for the oak hardwood flooring installation, the flooring material and oak floor finishing. So, if the room where you will install the oak hardwood floor is 10 feet by 14 feet (140 square feet), your final installation cost will be around $1,120.

If you select wide plank oak hardwood flooring, the costs will rise to around $12 per square foot finished and installed. In this example, the cost estimate to install oak hardwood flooring in your 10 x 14 room will be approximately $1,680.
