We are about to undertake a bathroom remodel and need someone who knows how to design a bathroom. We'd like clean and modern bath designs which incorporate a new shower stall, shower hardware, new vanity, new tiling, new wall treatments.

Hi Mitch, I just went through this a couple of years ago. As long as you have a backup to use while you are remodeling the bathroom, it's not too bad!

For me, the cost of a bathroom designer was $75 per hour and my designer billed me for 20 hours, so the total design cost was $1,500. Of course, this didn't include the actual cost for remodeling the bathroom (materials, contractor, etc.) which was many times more!

Since I had no idea how to design a bathroom, I felt like the $1,500 was an insurance policy for me, making sure that the bath ideas we created for our master bathroom would be thoroughly professional and stand the test of time. I'll let you know in 20 years how my bath designs held up :)

Our bathroom designer took us on a field trip to our local design center, which we wouldn't have been able to do without her. You actually need to be in the design or remodeling profession to get in to the showrooms. She also pushed us to do things (tile patterns, fixtures, colors) that we wouldn't have gravitated to naturally but which look fabulous in the whole package.

Doing it yourself is always fund, but like most things in life, using a professional yields professional results!

Thanks for the cost info Meggers, that's very helpful! Our designer has quoted $95/hour with a line in the invoice that says "Reduced rate for project commitment: $75/hour" so I guess she's in line with what you had. - mitch 1 year, 2 months ago

I totally agree on the "insurance" comment. I feel like I have a good design eye for the specifics, but a designer does a great job pulling it all together and pushing you slightly outside of your comfort zone to achieve more than you can on your own! - barbara 1 year, 2 months ago

What to expect from a bathroom designer

I recently sought help to design a bathroom myself. My bathroom designer produced basic bath designs and drawings for the tile and fixture layout which the bathroom remodeler was able to use for construction. I used the existing plumbing layout, which made things much easier and much cheaper.

Another thing my bathroom designer did was specify the lighting, cabinet and fixtures and specified the wall colors for painting. It was so nice having someone make the tough decisions for me! Good luck with your bathroom design and remodel! You will love working with a professional who knows how to design a bathroom and make it look awesome!
