Two of the bedrooms will be two-color (two walls one color, two another) and one will be a single color. I'll need the flat-textured ceilings painted white in each room as well.

Find Local Painters

Get free price quotes from the best house painting companies in your area

Hi timfou! I just had a bunch of rooms in my house painted (2 bedrooms, 2 hallways, dining room, living room, den).

Although I was happy with my results, I highly suggest talking with a handful of painting companies to get a cost estimate for your specific job.

My painter did a nice job, but talking around with my neighbors, I think I may have overpaid as much as 20%! Ugh, that takes some of the joy out of my newly painted rooms!

My first tip is to work with a good interior designer to help pick and coordinate the colors between rooms. Even though you might love how that Pumpkin Orange paint looks in your kitchen and the way the Royal Blue pulls out the highlights in your living room curtains, a designer will make sure that the transitions from room to room are not too abrupt and that your tones and saturations fit well together.

You can still get the colors that you want, but maybe instead of or Pumpkin Orange and Royal Blue, you'll use the more compatible Delicious Melon and Riverside Blue.

One you have your colors, your next step is to find three to five painting contractors to take a look at your project and give you specific cost estimates. Don't just make your decision on cost, though. Ask each contractor for references from past clients.

Some sample questions to ask the contractors' references:

Did the contractor do a good painting job? Were their border lines (e.g. between the ceiling and wall) sharp and crisp? Was the wall coverage good? Was the paint quality good and has it proven to be durable?

Did the contractor clean up adequately every night before going home?

Was the contractor professional and courteous? Did they keep their music at a reasonable level and use appropriate language around your family? Did any of the painters smoke, if so, did they do it far enough away from the home to not expose your family to second-hand smoke?

Did they avoid getting paint splatter on your rug, hardwood floors and furniture?

If you requested faux, textured or decorative finishes, did they execute them well?

Would you hire this contractor again to do additional interior painting in your home?

In summary:

Work with an interior decorator to pick beautiful colors

Get cost estimates from at least three local painting contractors

Speak with a couple references from each

Selected a winning contractor and watch the interior of your house be transformed!

Short of adding to or rearranging your furniture, there's nothing quite like the transformative power of paint!
