Unfortunately, buying and installing a central air conditioning system is not a do-it-yourself project you need the help of a qualified professional to do it right.

Like all service-based projects, it's a good idea to spend some time upfront making sure that you pick the right professional. The more contractors you have bidding on your project, the greater likelihood that you will lower your overall cost. As well, the more professionals you speak with, the more sure you can be that you have the best, most experienced company working in your home.

The A/C contractor will help you determine if your home is suitable for an air conditioning system. If your home is currently being constructed, then there will be little problem working in the duct work necessary. Also, if your home already has a forced hot air heating system, then the new AC system can piggyback on the heating system's ducts.

If either of those two cases don't fit your project, then you are looking at significantly higher costs to install the ductwork and central air system. The "This Old House" website has a good article about adding central air.

They estimate that the cost to add central air to a 2,000 square foot house with an existing forced hot air system will be around $3,750. For homes where duct work needs to be added, they estimate that the costs will likely double to around $8,000.

Selecting the right equipment is secondary in importance only to selecting the right contractor. You'll need a reliable, energy efficient unit which can handle the cooling capacity of your home and climate. A qualified air-conditioning professional can help you pick the right size and model equipment for your needs.
